Did you know… the Gurus do Search Engine Optimization?

Yes, it’s true we do SEO (Search Engine Optimization)…

For our web hosting and website design clients in San Diego and beyond, Computer Gurus has always managed basic Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Up until last year, our basic SEO was simply linking client sites to the top 5 search indexes, social media, and sitemap updates, and showing you how to use those tools to make sure you were out there and find-able. But, Search Engine Optimization (SEO) status has become too complicated and w-a-a-a-a-y to important to our on-line existence to be played at. Because of that many of you (our clients in San Diego specifically) have been asking us to manage the details of your Search Engine Optimization (SEO) for sometime now.

Search Engine Optimization has become too complicated and way to important to our on-line existence to be played at.

Sometimes it is hard to take someone else’s on a subject; It’s just not enough. So, CompGu is getting into the nitty-gritty, down-n-dirty and money where our mouth is… We are putting our pride on the line and printing our page ranks, as of TODAY. (I think to Google-ites call it “eating your own dog food”) We will track page rankings for the keywords “SEO,* San Diego SEO, We SEO, SEO Guru“. We will also take other suggestions, if you would like to see them…                                                     There it is right there ==> )

WHY?

Though we have clients who are happy with our Search Engine Optimization (SEO) work, we want to show that we know SEO. So stay tuned as we put our SEO Guru Skilz to work here in San Diego.

(HEY!, If you want in on the bet, Send us a message and we can discuss the stakes.)

As a side note: Our hosting is now managed by a sister group, MyDigiWorld Hosting! They provide the same AWESOME, local (in San Diego) Guru expertise, on NEWER hardware, FASTER connections (can you say BANDWIDTH) , and FEWER LIMITS on storage and bandwidth. This allows the Gurus you love, to focus on what we do best…

That’s to make the technology work for you, and Shape your digital world!

Did You Know… about Hosted Email Filtering?

Before you call your Helpdesk, Gain control of your in-box with “+”, “.” and Hosted Email Filtering.

When you choose a hosted email address (like Gmail or Yahoo Mail), you actually get more than just “username@gmail.com.” Here are two different ways you can modify your hosted email address and still get your mail:

  • Add one or more (“.”) anywhere in your email address. Gmail doesn’t recognize periods as characters in addresses, they ignore them. For example, you could tell people our address was compgu@gmail.com, comp.gu@gmail.com or even c.o.mp.gu@gmail.com. (please don’t spam me) As far as I know this is unique to Gmail, but YMMV.
  • Append a plus (“+”) sign and additional label after your email address. For example, if our email is compgu@gmail.com, you could send mail to compgu+friends@gmail.com or compgu+mailinglists@gmail.com. This is pretty much a standard in most hosted email servers, including postfix, Exchange, Gmail and Yahoo! mail.

Why does this matter?

The real benefit here is that your email will come in with a variation of your normal hosted email address. It then becomes possible to create to use email filtering to sort emails based on those slight differences and your email application can be used to sort, mark read or even star (mark favorite) emails that come into your hosted email account.

You can do this for newsgroups, newsletters and other lists, or even for services like online banking. For example, we added “+sitealert” when we set-up our website monitor to alert us on outages. When that hosted email address filter is triggered my phone blows up like Disney’s Christmas Parade.

Did you Know… about SOPA?

Congress is trying to censor your internet!

What?

This website and many affiliated sites will be “censored” on January 18th, 2012 in protest of the SOPA and PIPA bills currently before Congress. Our site will have a “censored” page displayed on the top of our page when you first visit. You can choose to click-through or visit the SOPA Blackout information site.

Why?

PIPA and SOPA are Anti-Piracy bills (and we would like digital piracy to end), HOWEVER, the wording of these bill drastically affects how the internet operates and will affect how we provide services to our customers. This will cause many online business unfair hardship and expense.

Please take the time to read about SOPA and PIPA. Make your opinion known.

Did You Know… ?

Creating address labels are a snap with Mail Merge!

Most office programs have a feature called Mail Merge. This feature allows you to pull address information from a spreadsheet, contact management programs like ACT or even Outlook as well as databases of all types. With this feature you can import your address lists which means you don’t have to type them all in again. You can import those addresses into labels, form letters, for envelope printing even creating greeting cards. After the import you can design your labels for different occasions. (We just did a batch with  Christmas icons for that festive feel.)

For help setting up your mail merge give us a call.

Did You Know… ?

Each user should have their own account!!!

When securing a network, website, servers, CRM or ANY user based system, each user should ALWAYS have their own account and sign-in credentials.

Why is this true?

In the business of network security, many companies do not consult experts until they have already been compromised (whether they know it or not). Individual log-ins allow lock downs of resources to key personnel and the ability to track the access of that data…

The second biggest hacking concern among IT executives, at 28 percent, is having one of their own employees steal company data and posts it online, much like what happened at the Department of Defense (DoD) with WikiLeaks.” – August 30, 2011 –  Highland Capital Partners:  http://www.hcp.com/news/newsdetails.php/id/93594.

While it is greatly important for all users to have their own log-in, it is not nearly as useful if there exists no policy for tracking log-in attempts or changing access rights to those resources. For example, if you an employee leaves the company it is best practice to remove the account and ensure that passwords are changed to any “known or shared” resources.

Did you know? - brought to you by Computer Gurus

Generic or off-brand supplies will NOT void your printer warranty.

Struggling with the cost of supplies for your home or business class printer?

Here is an excerpt from the Consumer help website Consumer Choice

Have you ever heard that using a remanufactured toner cartridge will “void your warranty?” Next time a repair technician says that, tell them to put it in writing. Chances are he won’t. Why? Because it can be illegal to require a consumer to use specific supplies in order to maintain a warranty.

You have the right to use the supplies of your choice! Printer manufacturer warranties state that the use of third-party supplies alone does not void your warranty. Warranties are only voided if the cartridge actually caused the damage. Under these circumstances, the cartridge remanufacturer will repair it.

- for full article go to http://www.consumerchoice.info/warranty/htm

Whether it is an inkjet or laser printer there are many less expensive alternatives to the brand name supplies for your printer. Lets talk about a few of these options.

Paper: There really is no good behind the thought “brand name is better” in this case. Many office supply stores provide superior or like kind paper products for a lot less. The only exception to this may be specialty paper and this is still questionable. If you have a niche printing job there may be only a handful of makers for that specific kind of paper. The rare examples of this I have experienced are Ultra-high quality papers like “canvas-photo paper”, low or no acid papers (for scrap booking) and some printer compatible stationery.

Ink: Are you still paying $20 – $30 or more for ink cartridges at your retailer? Here are a couple of options with a few pros and cons to weigh.

  • Cartridge Refill Kit: You can find a few different “refill-kits” for ink cartridge. The process is pretty straight forward and you will generally receive a small “how-to” guide (one sheet of paper generally) with an ink syringe of some type and a plug or sticker to seal the “refill hole”. These are the LOWEST price alternative but it has a few drawbacks.
+ Pros: Lowest price.
- Cons: No warranty, not tested. Sometimes a refill can be faulty after multiple refills. The only way to test these refilled cartridges are on you printer.
Guru Tip: I have not seen too many of these kits with any kind of warranty, since you are doing all of the work you are taking all of the risk.

  • Cartridge Refillers: There are companies that specialize in this process. It is so common (and simple) that some office supply outlets have jumped into the game. In its simplest for, the store takes an empty cartridge, refills them, seals and tests them and sells them at a MUCH lower price than a new *OEM cartridge.
+ Pros: Lower price, Pre-tested, Usually has warranty
- Cons: Not the rock-bottom price, A refill can be faulty after multiple refills. Generally you can return to company for a refund or replacement.
Guru Tip: not all refill companies are created equal so when you find one that works for you, stick with them.

  • Third Party Cartridges: There are companies that create their own cartridges so to remove the problem associated with using overly refilled cartridges. Again this is a common practice. The 3rd part cartridges sometimes have other features such as a longer shelf life or slightly larger ink well (more prints). again these are generally sold at a lower price than an *OEM cartridge.
+ Pros: Lower price, Pre-tested, Usually has warranty
- Cons: Not the rock-bottom price
Guru Tip: Always check the warrant information on 3rd party cartridges and again when you find one that works for you, stick with them.

Toner: Starting around $45 for a toner cartridge at a local supply store these are a great candidate for non-OEM products. The same options are available for Toner that are available for ink cartridges. The only difference would be in the exact methods of refilling these products.

In all cases make sure the manufacturer of your given solution (for toner and ink especially) have your printer make and model on their acceptable replacement list. This is a list of devices on which their product has been tested. Be sure you look for these lists when going for one of these alternatives and you should be right as rain.

The Gurus define: OEM – Original Equipment Manufacturer, for example HP is the OEM of the HP DeskJet. They will sell supplies that are manufactured and carry a warranty by them for “maximum performance” of the product (and maximum profit for them ).

As always, if you have questions or need the Gurus to help you with your products or other computing needs, contact us directly.

How to get website hits? a few SEO hints from the Gurus:

Need more traffic on your site? Ranking on Google or Bing falling behind?

There are many free tools and services to help you get the most out of your existing web site.

  • Check out the free tools on sites like @ineedhits (http://www.ineedhits.com/). The meta tag generator is cool and can help increase your web traffic by placing your site int he correct search results lists.
  • Social Network sites can provide back-links to your website and increase your search engine rankings as well as attract visitors. More back-links means more visitors. More visitors means higher page rankings. Higher rankings (USUALLY in a non-corrupt google universe) means better organic (not paid) page placing. We use Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn to supplement our content distribution and web site blog.
  • Submitting your sites to alternative search engines creates back links, and also feeds the big boys of the Search Engine world (Bing and Google). The ASR Search Engine independently catalogs and ranks websites. Other “alternative” search engines like SearchSight allow you to, as they put it, “Look at the Internet Differently.” They provide a cataloged thumbnail of your website that can be searched by topic or region. These both feed into “the system” of Search Engine results as back-links as well as providing their own results from user searches.

Even with free tools, content updates are IMPORTANT. Updates to your website or blog content, as well as the content on other websites that contain links to you, are a biggie. The more frequently content is updated with ON TOPIC, pertinent information, the more you will see your URL in the search engine results set.

These are just a few of the Search Engine Optimization tips and tricks that our Gurus use daily. If you would like more information, or to have our SEO team work on your site, contact us directly and we will be more than happy to help.
